Graduates and their parents packed Faith Chapel for graduation Thursday. One of those waiting for her name to called was Somer Waldrop. After finally getting her diploma, Somer got the surprise of her life. Somer's older brother Trevor, who has just returned from Afghanistan, appeared at the stage.

"I wasn't sure I was going to make it back to my sister's graduation. We faced some hardships while we were on deployment. This is the best way I could say I support her," Waldrop said.

To the Waldrop family members who were in on the surprise it was a special moment.

"It was worth a million. I wouldn't give anything for that. I knew she wanted to see him. They were close. He had been planning this for seven months," Phoebe Waldrop, mother of Somer and Trevor, said.

PINSON, AL (WBRC)- Birmingham Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's office are searching for an armed man who robbed the Dollar General in Pinson Friday morning.

Police say the suspect waited for all of the customers to leave the store on Pinson Valley Parkway then walked in, armed with a weapon, and demanded money.

Authorities haven't said how much money was stolen, but they say he put the cash in a red backpack and fled the scene.

Surveillance video of the robbery shows the suspect running behind the store. A K9 unit has been brought in to search the woods behind the building.

"He ran around the side of the building so we think he's on foot and if there was a car in the back then he may be away from the scene," Sgt. Frederick Washington with BPD said.

"We hope he's still in the vegetation and because we got on the scene so quickly, we called in the K9 to help capture our suspect," Washington added.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- A man accused of abusing his pit bulls has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.

The original case of animal abuse dates back to 2011. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Denearious Mooney has to pay a $2,000 fine and $2,800 in restitution to BJC Animal Control for the cost of caring for his dogs after they were seized.

The owner of the dogs was once suspected of trying to burn to death 12 other pit bulls.

On September 2, 2011, Shady Grove firefighters found the 12 pit bulls while fighting the fire that a sheriff's spokesman says was designed to burn the dogs to death.

Firefighters had to use bolt cutters to break the chains and carry the dogs to safety.

A judge has also ruled that Mooney can't own any dogs for two years.

JeffCo hopes new bill will cut wait in car tag line

Source: WBRC

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Jefferson County did not get a lot of help from the recently completed legislative session. But, one bill may help shorten some of the long lines for those trying to renew car tags or to do other county business.

Alabama Revenue officials believe House Bill 215 by Homewood Rep. Paul DeMarco will cut the tag lines. In the past, if there is joint ownership of a vehicle, two identifications had to be presented to register that vehicle. DeMarco said that will change immediately under the bill to help cut down on waiting time. Another provision will allow for people to purchase specialty tags online. This change will start the first of next year.

"This is something they said would have an impact on the lines by streamlining some of the process. Reducing some of the paper work. So this will hopefully bring some relief," DeMarco said.

Taxpayers waiting in line are hoping for any relief.

PLEASANT GROVE, AL (WBRC)- Pleasant Grove Police Chief Robert Knight confirms that a Hueytown woman made up the story that she was attacked in a cemetery.

The woman was found around 5 a.m. by a Jefferson County deputy near the Forest Grove Memorial Gardens. She was reportedly incoherent and had a plastic bag over her head. She told police that she was visiting the grave of a friend around 2:30 a.m. when a man came up behind her, put the bag on her head and tried to unbutton her pants.

As it turns out, the report is false, according to investigators. Detective Jason Davis says the woman made up the report to gain the attention of an estranged boyfriend.

Police say the woman's story has caused great concern among residents. They want to assure the public that in this case, there is no man attacking women.
