JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Jefferson County deputies are investigating the discovery of a body in the North Smithfield community, saying the case is now considered a homicide.
Officials responded to Meridith Street North and Pope Lane early Wednesday evening after receiving a call that a body might be nearby. When deputies arrived, they found the body of an unidentified black female.
The body has been identified as 22-year-old Antanisha Dawson of Birmingham. Investigators say they believe Dawson may have been killed at another location and dumped at the location where her body was discovered.
Deputy Chief Randy Christian confirms that a man who lives in the neighborhood found the woman's body while walking in the area.
The sheriff's office says Dawson was last seen by her family the day before her body was found. Detectives are currently interviewing the victim's friends and family and anyone she may have had contact with in the 24 hours prior to her body being found.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 205-325-1450 or Crimestoppers at 205-254-7777.
