JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Voters will get a chance to offer their opinion on new voting lines after Jefferson County Registrar Barry Stephenson unveiled to county commissioners the proposed new redistricting map.

Jefferson County has a population of about 658,000. Stephenson says they wanted to divide the county into five districts with about equal populations of about 131,000 each. Jefferson County commissioners wanted to end some jagged districts and not have split voting precincts where two commissioners are on the same ballot representing an area.

"They wanted compact districts as close as possible. It's the commissioners' plan at the end of the day. So what was proposed today is where are are now. We can still make adjustments later," Stephenson said.

The Jefferson County Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed new county district lines Feb. 14 in the county commission chamber for voters to offer their opinion.
