The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man last night at a gas station in Center Point.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 8 p.m. Sunday at a BP gas station and convenience store on Center Point Parkway near 23rd Ave NW. Deputies discovered a man lying in the parking lot, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim has been identified as Henry Lamar Smoot, 27, of Center Point. Smoot was taken to UAB Hospital where he died in surgery, the sheriff's department says.
Witnesses say several shots were fired and a black male ran away from the area. Deputies believe the suspect attempted to rob Smoot and when he resisted, the suspect shot him.
The sheriff's office believes the man wearing a red shirt in the surveillance photos to the right is the shooter. He is considered a suspect in the case. Investigators believe the man wearing a black shirt and black jacket was in the car with the suspected shooter.
The two men left the scene in a gold car. Anyone with information about the people shown in the photos or the shooting is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff' Office at 205-325-1450.
